Your Challenge:

The Director of Government Relations serves as a member of the Content Development Team matrixed with the Relationship Management team to develop and execute plans for HIMSS engagement with U.S. federal agencies, and policy development on leading issues, including interoperability, health information exchange, artificial intelligence, and machine learning.  The position works directly with the Senior Director to develop strategic plans, budgets, and staff development outlines to ensure HIMSS Government Relations meets the expectations of the Executive Leadership Team, Board of Directors, and members of HIMSS.  As a senior leader working in GR matrixed environment, the Director works directly with Government Relations and Informatics team members to ensure Content Development staff and other HIMSS staff and member subject matter experts are utilized in the development and execution of HIMSS thought leadership resources, public policy positions, and relevant initiatives. 

 

The Director will work with the Senior Vice President, Sr. Directors, and Directors to develop and execute visionary projects that include curating strategies and tactics that incorporate Board and Executive Leadership Team guidance and ensure the GR team is able to identify and deliver on policy priorities.

 

The Director will support the team’s matrixed design by directing GR content development and appropriate relationship management with U.S. federal and international agencies that support HIMSS policy goals.

The Director’s portfolio will include 20% focus on identifying opportunities for HIMSS resources to be utilized by government to advance policy development, including opportunities to respond to government contracting and requests for proposals and information opportunities.

 

This position would ideally be located in the Arlington, VA area in a hybrid capacity.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Serve as the primary representative for engagement with U.S. federal agency leaders, and collaborate with the Senior Vice President, Senior Director Government Relations and Quality, and Strategic Relations team on the development and execution of strategic initiatives with government officials, with a particular focus on White House and senior agency officials.
  • Serves as HIMSS primary representative to envision and execute the development of strategic content to support HIMSS public policy initiatives consistent with HIMSS Public Policy Principles and strategic pillars.
  • Collaborate with the SVP, VP of Informatics, Director of Operations, and other GR-Informatics team members to develop and maintain a process for identifying revenue generation opportunities for HIMSS resources and business units to determine capability of responding to requests for proposals, grant opportunities, etc.
  • Develop and manage budgets to support the execution of the strategic plans and associated content creation.
  • Provide strategic oversight of plan development designed to engage national, state/provincial, and local policy leaders to ensure cohesive execution that ensure as primary linkage with Content Development, Strategic Relations, and Informatics teams to coordinate linkage between government legislative and regulatory initiatives, as well as working closely with other key policy and standards development stakeholders.
  • Serve as the policy liaison to U.S. and international policy resources to ensure HIMSS content is included in policy development at the national, state/provincial, and local levels.
  • Serve as the policy liaison to the Americas Board of Advisors and has primary responsibility for engagement with countries and entities within the portfolio as identified and agreed upon by the Senior Director of Government Relations and Quality in collaboration with the Senior Vice President and Head of Government Relations.
  • Provide senior level strategic input in of the creation and maintenance of the HIMSS Public Policy Principles and associated content for such policy pillars and foundational goals.

 

What you will need to be successful:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent) required.
  • A minimum of 7+ years of related work experience.
  • Excellent knowledge of Public Policy Development with a curiosity for the policy structures of any government HIMSS engages.
  • Exceptional writing and analytical skills.
  • Superior planning skills, both strategic and tactical.
  • Strong understanding of policy similarities and unique aspects of national, state/provincial, and local governments.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, member-focused attitude, with an ability to identify and build collaborative relationships.
